Western Toledo Preparatory Academy expands to Spring Meadows new satellite campus; now enrolling EK-8

Teachers and staff at Western Toledo Preparatory Academy kicked off a new school year on two campuses this year. The school originally opened on Hill Avenue two years ago and quickly became one of the best public schools in the state, ranking in the top 25 percent of Ohio charter schools.

In response to enrollment demand for the uniquely integrated academic and athletic program, WTPA administrators opened the Spring Meadows campus in August. The new satellite campus is located on Timberwolf Drive, in the former site of iLEAD, a K-8 community school that closed this past spring.

Western Toledo Preparatory Academy at Spring Meadows has opened enrollment for students in Early Kindergarten (turning five years old before January 1st) through Grade 8. The new campus offers a well-rounded education with an emphasis on STEM learning.

Offering variety and school choice to Holland families, the Spring Meadows campus features an open-plan classroom environment that provides students opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and teamwork. Classrooms are sectioned by partitions and furnishings to create interactive learning spaces. An impressive STEM Lab is outfitted with Mac computers, robotics, and 3-D printing.

“We’re excited about the future of our school and look forward to offering families a welcoming, well-rounded education where each child matters,” says Principal Kechan Johnson. An experienced educator who has been instrumental in the launch of the new school, Johnson says, “We’re building on the academic strengths of Western Toledo Preparatory Academy while developing a unique identity with STEM activities and a 21st-century learning approach. As a charter school, we have the flexibility to structure a program that best suits the needs of our students and families. We welcome partnerships from the community and involvement from parents as WTPA Spring Meadows grows into a thriving school community.”

Western Toledo Preparatory Academy at Spring Meadows is still accepting students in Early Kindergarten through Grade 8 for the Fall term. Families interested in learning more can visit westerntoledosm.org/request-information.

Western Toledo Preparatory Academy Expanding to Meet Community Demand New Satellite Campus Opening in Spring Meadows

Toledo, August 1–Western Toledo Preparatory Academy (WTPA) is expanding its current campus and adding a satellite school this fall to meet demand from the community. WTPA ranks in the top 25% of Ohio charter schools and received five stars for progress from the Ohio Department of Education last school year. The K-8 school is managed by ACCEL Schools, a leading public charter school management organization working to address educational inequities through its nationwide network of 85 schools.

The satellite campus, Western Toledo Preparatory Academy at Spring Meadows, is located at the site of the former iLEAD campus at 1615 Timberwolf Drive in Holland. The new K-8 campus will offer a well-rounded college preparatory educational model that prioritizes students’ social-emotional wellness. Registration is open for the start of school this August.

In addition to the new school, the original WTPA campus is expanding to meet the needs of a growing student body. Work is underway currently to add a baseball and softball field. Construction has started on a hinged bridge for commercial vehicles to access campus from Hill Avenue, limiting the impact of construction on the neighboring community. Following the bridge completion, the school will add six new modular classrooms with a slated completion of this December.

Prospective families are invited to attend Parent Information & Game Night at the Spring Meadows campus this Thursday, August 3 from 4-6pm to find out more information about the school expansion and enroll for the upcoming school year. To RSVP visit westerntoledosm.org/events.

  • Full year (August – May) program
  • Applicants must turn five years old by January 1st
  • A brief Kindergarten assessment is required during the registration process

Our Early Kindergarten Program teacher will be in regular communication with you throughout the year to discuss your child’s progress toward his or her individual learning goals.

The ACCEL Schools Difference

We are a proud member of ACCEL Schools—a public charter school network serving thousands of PK-12 students throughout the United States. ACCEL was founded in 2012 by the early pioneers of online learning. Our leadership believes that all children, regardless of location or socio-economic background, deserve a quality education that prepares them to succeed in school and become productive global citizens.

ACCEL Schools Instructional Model provides:

  • Certified, Licensed Teachers and a student-centered staff are united in executing our mission to make a difference in the life trajectory of each student.
  • More Time on Task and double the instructional minutes for ELA and Math maximizes learning in your child’s school day.
  • Short Cycle Assessments keep track of how students are progressing in the program, giving teachers ongoing feedback so they can tailor instruction to your student’s needs.
  • Individualized Instruction driven by assessment data means we are familiar with the needs of each child and set students up for success in each course of study.

How We Individualize Instruction

At Western Toledo Prep, we implement the ACCEL Instructional Model (AIM) which starts with an Ohio Standards-based curriculum taught by properly certified and licensed teachers. We frequently assess students (on a bi-weekly schedule) to know if a student is working ahead, falling behind, or right on track when it comes to mastering the learning standards for their grade level.

We review the data from these regular assessments and tailor instruction to each student’s needs. While many schools formally assess students at the end of the quarter, we believe that assessing students in shorter cycles gives our teachers early and regular insight into student progress.

Our teachers utilize a variety of learning activities and tools each day to individualize instruction in each subject area. Students receive whole class instruction, small group instruction, and one-on-one instruction. Our teachers additionally utilize Education Technology and other adaptive curricular tools to maximize learning in each school day.
